Bachelor of Arts in Music in Recording Technology

Do I need to play an instrument?
Not necessarily! While instrumentalists—including students who play guitar, bass, keyboards, and/or
drums—are welcome, you don’t have to be an instrumentalist to pursue this major. Commercial singers and students who create and produce digital music using digital audio workstation (DAW) software are also encouraged to apply.

Can I audition after February 15?
Yes, you may audition after February 15. However, to be considered for a competitive scholarship award, your audition must be completed by February 15.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, scholarships are available. They are competitive and require students to complete an interview and audition—or an interview and submission of a digital music portfolio by February 15.
Who will my advisor be?
The advisors for this program are Mr. Kevin Blackmon, Mr. Matthew Miller, and Dr. Shane Colquhoun.
Do I need a special computer or any special equipment?
Access to computers and digital audio workstation software is provided in the Music Computer Lab located on the 3rd floor of Tullibody Music Building. The University also provides a fully stocked recording studio for technology classes and student use.
Will I need to pay for studio time?
No. ASU students are not charged for studio time. Students can sign up for studio time through their course instructors.
Do I need to have any previous musical training?
Prior musical training can be helpful, but it is not required. The program begins with the fundamentals and progresses systematically, allowing students without formal music training to develop foundational knowledge and skills. As students advance through the program, they build on these fundamentals through practical, experiential learning in lab and other hands-on settings.
