Financial Aid

When it comes to finances and paying for college costs, planning ahead is always the first step in the right direction! Since our founding in 1867, Alabama State University has worked to make the fundamental right of an education accessible to all people. We believe cost should never be an obstacle to seeking the benefits of higher education. That’s why our Office of Financial Aid  will work hard to make sure you are informed about the many types of aid available to you and guide you through the process of securing financial assistance.


HOW TO APPLY

 

Step 1: Be admitted to Alabama State University (click here to apply now);

Step 2: Get a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). Click here to visit the FAFSA site now;

Step 3: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year at https://fafsa.gov as soon as possible after October 1st for the upcoming school year.  Students should not exit the website until the application has been electronically signed using FSA IDs and received a confirmation message that their information has been successfully submitted to the Department of Education.

Step 4: Complete a Loan Counseling Session (click Entrance Entrance Counseling | Federal Student Aid to complete now);

Step 5: Sign a Master Promissory Note (click Completing a Master Promissory Note | Federal Student Aid to esign now);

Step 6: Register for classes;

Step 7: Sign up for direct deposit  (optional);

Step 8: Check Hornets Web for award and refund information;

Step 9: Pay remaining account balance not covered by financial aid;

Step 10: Keep your information updated in Hornets Web.

 

VERIFICATION

Note:  30% of all FAFSAs each year will be selected by the Department of Education for a process of review called verification. Database matches are performed by comparing FAFSA data with the Social Security Administration, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Selective Service System, National Student Loan Data System, and others. Students may be required to submit additional documentation to Alabama State University. If you have been selected for verification, additional documents are needed. To find out if you have been selected and what is needed, do the following:

Office of Financial Aid is pleased to announce we have established a partnership with Inceptia to expedite the federal verification process for Alabama State University. Verification Gateway (VG) from Inceptia is an online portal to guide students and parents through verification.

If your FAFSA application is selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education, you will receive an email from VGCS@inceptia.org, or a postcard from Inceptia, containing Alabama State University’s unique website link to start the verification process.

We encourage you to begin the verification process within seven days of receiving notification from Verification Gateway to ensure you receive your financial aid in time for payments. Failure to complete the verification process could result in the delay or denial of your financial aid.

Follow these steps to complete your verification.

  • Access our school’s unique website link in the email from VGCS@inceptia.org or listed below.
  • Create your account* and choose preferences for text messages and e-signatures.
  • Complete your Task List.
  • Confirm your signature and review your information.
  • Sign your account.

 

*If you are a dependent student, your parent also needs to create their own account and complete each of these steps.

Be sure to complete your FAFSA annually

If you have not completed a FAFSA, do the following:

  1. If your are starting Spring 2023 - Complete a 2022/2023 FAFSA
  2. Request an FSA ID from www.studentaid.gov (A FSA ID should be requested by both student and parent)
  3. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

If you have been selected for verification, additional documents are needed. To find out if you have been selected and what is needed, do the following:

  1. Access Hornets Web: Check your To-Do List
  2. If selected for Verification, submit the documents listed on your To-Do List asap.
  3. (Be prepared to contact your local IRS office or visit www.irs.gov to obtain your TAX RETURN TRANSCRIPT)
     

If you received an award letter:
 

You can review your award letter by doing the following:

  1. Login to Hornets Web.
  2. Click the Financial Aid tab.
  3. Select the award year you will be attending.
  4. Accept or decline award offers from this screen.

If you decide to accept federal loans, you MUST complete Loan Entrance Counseling and fill out a Master Promissory Note at studentaid.gov.

>> Loan funds will be disbursed 30 days after the first day of class for all first-time borrowers.


If you received an Academic Scholarship


Please send the Scholarship Acceptance form by your due date to finaid@alasu.edu.

 

If you have Private / Outside Scholarships 

Please send all private/outside scholarships to finaid@alasu.edu.
