Protecting the availability, privacy and confidentiality of patient information is fundamental to ensuring a safe and effective health care experience for everyone. Build foundational knowledge in medical terminology, financial management and information systems and become the critical link between patients, providers and business executives.

Recovering from an injury or developing the skills needed for activities of daily living and working can be stressful. Health Sciences majors who are considerate and empathetic would flourish as occupational therapists working closely with people who suffer from disabilities or who are recovering.

Our three-year Doctorate in Physical Therapy is ideal for Health Sciences majors who hold a degree in a health care field and want to specialize in helping people with deficits in mobility to maximize their quality of life through rehabilitation, including prevention, wellness, fitness, health promotion and management of disease and disability.

Prosthetics and Orthotics

As the only one of its kind at an HBCU (and one of only 13 in the country) that offers a Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics, Health Sciences majors from this program are sought-after around the world for their expertise, empathy and experience assessing and implementing treatment plans for individuals with limb loss or deficiencies in nontraditional and marginalized populations.

Welcome to the College of Health Sciences (COHS) at Alabama State University (ASU). I thank you for your interest in ASU’s health sciences programs. The COHS consists of five departments: Health Information Management, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Rehabilitation Studies. I would like to invite you to visit our beautiful campus, become a part of our quality educational environment and share in the rich history at Alabama State University.

The mission of ASU’s College of Health Sciences is to educate and graduate health-related professionals characterized by academic excellence, the use of critical/clinical reasoning and ethical decision-making skills. We pride ourselves on producing graduates who contribute to improving health care delivery and are committed to eliminating health disparities and providing evidence-based, interdisciplinary care with a special emphasis on marginalized populations.

Our programs offer student-centered curricula that provide an excellent learning experience in small programs in health sciences that allow students to engage with highly qualified faculty. Our Health Sciences majors work with faculty on prominent research projects, gain real-world experience through clinical internships, fieldwork experiences or practicums, and participate in many community and professional development activities.

Professional opportunities in health care have never been more exciting. With advances in technology and limitless research opportunities, our students are being prepared for critical health sciences jobs that will impact the world. Of all the notable aspects of being an ASU health science student, none is more important to us than the diverse student environment and the variety of perspectives that come together to create an outstanding student learning experience.

The COHS offers six health sciences programs, including Bachelor of Science degrees in Health Information Management and Rehabilitation Services (with a Concentration in Addiction). Our graduate degrees include a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT), a Master of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics (MSPO), and a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC).
