For many college students, success is about more than attending classes and completing assignments. It can also mean learning how to navigate financial challenges, adjusting to college life, finding the right academic resources, planning for a career and staying motivated through graduation.

At Alabama State University, Student Support Services (SSS) is helping eligible students meet those challenges with a comprehensive support system designed to guide them from enrollment to graduation.

A federally funded TRIO program, SSS provides eligible ASU students with free resources and individualized assistance aimed at strengthening academic success, improving retention and helping students reach their educational goals.

“Student Support Services plays an important role in helping eligible students overcome barriers that can affect college persistence and completion,” said Dr. Acquanetta Pinkard, TRIO director.  “Through individualized support, academic resources, mentoring, financial literacy, and student engagement opportunities, SSS helps students remain focused on their educational goals and progress toward graduation.”

The program serves students who may face barriers to completing a college degree, including first-generation college students, students who meet federal income guidelines and students with disabilities.

For participants, support can begin with understanding the college experience and continue throughout their academic journey.

“SSS offers academic advising, tutoring and other educational resources to help students strengthen their skills and stay on track academically,” added Pinkard.

She emphasized the program's support extends beyond the classroom. Through financial literacy education, students can develop a better understanding of financial responsibilities and resources. Personal and career development opportunities help participants prepare not only for graduation, but also for life after college. Cultural and educational activities provide opportunities for students to learn, engage and build connections with their peers and University community.

“These services are designed around a simple goal: helping students recognize that they do not have to navigate college alone,” stressed Pinkard.

For students who may be unfamiliar with TRIO programs or unsure whether they qualify, increasing awareness of SSS is an important part of connecting them with resources that could make a difference in their college experience. Some students may not realize that they are eligible or may overlook support services because they believe they must handle academic or personal challenges on their own.

SSS offers another path—one built around encouragement, mentorship, resources and individualized support.

By connecting eligible students with people and resources dedicated to their success, Pinkard said.  Student Support Services can help students address challenges before they become obstacles to graduation. Whether a student needs academic assistance, guidance with financial literacy, career preparation, personal development or opportunities to become more engaged on campus, SSS provides a network of support.

“Students should not wait until they are struggling to seek support. By learning about Student Support Services early and taking advantage of the resources available, eligible students can build a stronger foundation for success—one semester, one goal and ultimately one graduation at a time,”  noted Pinkard.
