Alabama State University was buzzing with excitement on Saturday, August 15, as well over 300 runners, walkers, families and community members gathered on campus for the 4th annual Buzz Run 5K and Stinger's Fun Run. The event celebrated fitness, fellowship and community while raising support for the ASU Office of Accessibility and Veteran Affairs and the ASU Track and Field Team.
The event also reflected ASU’s commitment to “CommUniversity.”
“This institution is not just for those who study, work at and love ASU, but we also are here for the broader community, said President Quinton T. Ross, Jr., who has participated in the 5K every year.
Ross also commented on ASU’s partnering with a book giveaway at the event, highlighting the University’s commitment to supporting literacy and young scholars throughout the community.
“We are happy to partner with the organizers of the book giveaway. It is just one example of the University’s commitment to educating students at all levels,” Ross emphasized. “If there is anything we can do to impact literacy in our community, for all of our schools and for all of our young scholars coming up, we want to do that. We want to etch in their minds that they got their first book from Thee Alabama State University.”
Pushing Limits and Building Community
The 2026 Buzz Run attracted its largest turnout to date.
Participants gathered at 7 a.m. at The ASU Stadium, where anticipation filled the air before the race began. The scenic course wound through Alabama State University's beautiful campus, showcasing many of its iconic landmarks before returning to the stadium for the finish.
The first runner to cross the finish line in the 5K was Jvah Fletcher, 27, of Birmingham, Alabama.
“It feels good to come in first place and compete with strong competitors,” Fletcher said. “I plan on coming back to ASU’s Buzz Run next year and hopefully, come in first place again. I appreciate ASU hosting me and allowing me to participate. All the glory to God.”
Fletcher plans to build on the victory while preparing for another race later this year in Birmingham.
Every participant received a completion medal along with an ASU-branded T-shirt and fanny packs. The overall race champion earned a special plaque, while the top male and female finishers in multiple age divisions were also recognized with plaques honoring their achievements.
Stinger's Fun Run
Following the 5K, the spotlight shifted to the University's youngest runners during the Stinger's Fun Run for children ages 4-12.
The shorter course gave children the opportunity to experience the excitement of race day in a fun, safe and encouraging environment.
Each child who crossed the finish line received a finisher's medal, making every participant feel like a champion. They also received a bookbag filled with school supplies.
Buzz Fest Keeps the Celebration Going
The festivities continued after the races with ASU Buzz Fest at The ASU Stadium, where participants and community members enjoyed a morning packed with Hornet spirit.
Fans had the opportunity to meet ASU coaches and members of the Hornets football team, collect autographs and enjoy a performance by the Mighty Marching Hornets drumline. The celebration concluded with the football team's scrimmage, giving attendees an early look at the upcoming season.
A Growing Tradition
The event once again brought together people from across the River Region in a spirit of wellness, friendly competition and school pride, creating memories that will last long after the finish line.
“As for making this a regional event that showcases our Hornet Pride, it’s already established itself as a signature event,” Ross emphasized. “As you look around today, you can see it growing more and more each year. This is a diverse community, and we have a diverse crowd out here. Again, this is CommUniversity in action at its best, demonstrating that Alabama State University is a home for everyone—not just for those who live and work here.”
