Alabama State University's Office of Student Life, in partnership with Universal Connection, to host ASU’s CommUniversity Backpack Giveaway on Friday, Aug. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in The ASU Stadium Parking Lot.
The Backpack Giveaway will be held in conjunction with the Buzz Run festivities and will begin immediately following the Kids' Stinger’s Fun Run, making it convenient for families participating in the morning's activities.
"Parents who are already on campus for the Kids' Buzz Run can stop by and pick up a backpack for their child," said LaTasha Bell, coordinator of Student Life. "The public is also invited to attend."
The event is a community outreach initiative designed to support local students and families by providing backpacks filled with essential school supplies for the upcoming academic year.
"The backpack giveaway underscores the University's commitment to 'CommUniversity'—its philosophy that the University and the community thrive together," said Bell. "It strengthens partnerships between the University and the surrounding community while encouraging volunteerism, generosity and collective impact.”
Although Montgomery Public Schools will already be in session, the event provides students and families an opportunity to obtain school supplies they may still need after the start of the academic year.
The event also provides Alabama State University student leaders with an opportunity to engage directly with local families, reinforcing the University's Communiversity mission while demonstrating the Hornet spirit and commitment to service.
The Backpack Giveaway is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed while supplies last.
