At Alabama State University, a remarkable junior named Tuchondriana S. Smith has been named the 2025–26 George H. Andrews Student of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes Smith’s outstanding academic achievements, leadership, and resilience, setting her apart among her peers.

Smith, originally from Huntsville, Alabama, embodies the qualities of scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service that define this honor.

“I was honored to be selected as the Student of the Year,” she said. “Being a first-generation college student, I am constantly overcoming obstacles, but I like to persevere.”

Dr. Malinda Swoope, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, emphasized that “the award celebrates students who excel both inside and outside the classroom—a standard Smith has met with distinction throughout her college journey.”

Smith has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while navigating a demanding mechanical engineering program. Her leadership shines through her active participation in Collegiate 100, the Student Government Association, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and her role as a Hornet to Hornet mentor. Through these commitments, she has helped build a strong, supportive community on campus.

Smith’s experience and influence extend beyond the University. She attended a leadership academy in Washington, D.C., connecting with emerging leaders nationwide. She also gained valuable experience as a field engineering intern with Kiewit Construction, applying classroom knowledge to real-world projects. This summer, she is set to further her skills at a design internship with Caterpillar in Illinois, preparing for a promising engineering career.
