How do I get my VA benefits started at ASU? Contact OAVA at vmaffairs@alasu.edu or 334-229- 5127. All certification forms are
available in our office and online. Our office is located at C1.58 John Garrick Hardy
Student Center.
Do I have to complete the FAFSA if I have no plans to utilize any additional federal
aid? Yes, completing the FAFSA is now mandated for all students utilizing VA Educational
Benefits.
Are there any organizations on campus for veterans? Yes, the Student Veterans Association (SVA) is an organization for student veterans
and dependents.
I have my classes, but I haven’t registered because I have a hold on my account. Can
I still submit my certification form? No, you must be enrolled in classes prior to submitting your certification form to
OAVA.
Can I receive credit if I submit my JST Transcript? Yes, you will need to request that your JST Transcript is sent to Derriya Sankey
at dsankey@alasu.edu.
I have not received my stipend yet from the VA. When will I receive it? Once you are certified we cannot keep track of your stipend or when it will be dispersed.
For more information about when you will receive your stipend and/or tuition payment,
contact the VA Office at 1-888- 442-4551.
Once I submit my certification form, how long will it take for me to be certified? The SCO has 30 days to certify you once your certification form has been submitted.
How often should I apply for services? Students must self-identify and apply for services each semester so that proper paperwork
is submitted to each instructor and to ensure reasonable accommodations. It is important
to request services at the beginning of each semester.
What are reasonable accommodations? Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to a course, program,
service or activity that enable students with documented disabilities to have the
same privileges available as students without disabilities. The University is only
obligated to provide accommodations for the documented limitations of students with
disabilities.
Are disability records made a part of my permanent college file? No. Information about your contact with the Office of Accessibility and Veteran Affairs
is not kept in your permanent, academic or financial records.
