Four students from Alabama State University gathered at WorkPlay in Birmingham, Alabama, ready to showcase their innovative ideas at the Fellowship and Legacy Pitch Competition. Hosted by HBCU C.A.R.E.S. and Innovate Alabama, the event brought together bright minds from historically Black colleges and universities across the state in a fierce competition spotlighting top innovators in technology, agriculture, and health.
ASU’s 4GRD team (a student-led startup venture and pitch team) impressed judges with their professionalism, growth, and dedication to social impact, earning third place and $2,500 in seed funding to further develop their venture.
The 4GRD—Zeenat Abdulsalam, Claire Mbamadubuike, Victory Obele, and Celexis Robertson—introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered safety support app designed to help individuals affected by domestic violence and controlling relationships. Their app offers discreet alerts, decoy modes, and trauma-informed support, providing a silent and safe lifeline for survivors seeking help.
Adding to the celebrations, student entrepreneur from ASU, Antoine Edwards, received the Legacy Builder Innovator Award for his AI-driven, mobile truth-verification application in the Verifeye category. This recognition is reserved for standout participants who demonstrated vision, intentionality, and a commitment to creating meaningful, lasting impact.
Dr. Malinda Swoope, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and Dr. Brittany A. Holloman, executive director and CEO of HBCU C.A.R.E.S. in Birmingham, Alabama, praised the students' determination and the University's partnership in fostering innovation.
“Their work reflects the type of purpose-driven innovation and leadership being cultivated at Alabama State University,” said Holloman.
Swoope emphasized that the event marked a proud moment for Alabama State University, highlighting the power of purpose-driven innovation to create safer and stronger communities.
