Alabama State University has reached an extraordinary milestone – by successfully completing its Fifth-Year Interim Report review with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). ASU was deemed in full compliance across all reviewed standards with no follow-up reports, no referrals, and no additional monitoring required, marking a significant achievement in the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement.

The successful outcome reflects the university’s strong compliance with accreditation standards and demonstrates Alabama State University’s dedication to maintaining the highest levels of quality in higher education. The review process evaluated multiple areas of institutional operations, including academic quality, student achievement, governance, financial stability, assessment practices, and institutional effectiveness.

University leaders praised the collaborative efforts of faculty, staff, administrators, and campus stakeholders whose dedication and hard work contributed to the successful review.

“This outstanding outcome is a testament to the collective commitment of the Alabama State University community to excellence, accountability, and student success,” said ASU President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. “Accreditation is not simply a compliance exercise; it is a reflection of our institutional integrity, academic quality, and commitment to student success. The successful outcome of the Fifth-Year Interim Review affirms the strength of the work taking place at Alabama State University. Dr. Tanjula Petty’s leadership throughout this process exemplified professionalism, accountability, and excellence. We are grateful for her tireless efforts and the countless hours invested to ensure the university remained focused, organized, and prepared.”

The Fifth-Year Interim Report is a critical component of the accreditation reaffirmation process required by SACSCOC-accredited institutions. Institutions must demonstrate ongoing compliance with accreditation principles and provide evidence of institutional effectiveness and student achievement outcomes.

University officials also recognized the leadership and coordination efforts that guided the institution through the review process.

“We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and grateful for the collaboration across the university,” said Dr. Tanjula Petty, vice president of Institutional Effectiveness, Strategic Initiatives and Transformation. “This achievement reflects the collective dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence demonstrated across our institution. I am grateful for Dr. Ross’s trust in me to lead this effort, but I’m more grateful for my colleagues who assisted in this task, and for their unwavering commitment throughout this process.”

The successful completion of the Fifth-Year Interim Review further positions Alabama State University to continue advancing its strategic priorities, expanding research and academic opportunities, and strengthening outcomes for students and the broader community.

The SACSCOC Fifth-Year Interim Committee Review is a rigorous evaluation that takes place midway through an institution’s 10-year accreditation cycle. The review assesses continued compliance with key accreditation standards and evaluates the progress and effectiveness of the institution’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a long-term initiative designed to improve student learning and success.

During the review, SACSCOC evaluated ASU’s compliance with 22 specific core requirements and standards, including areas such as faculty qualifications and adequacy, student achievement, academic program quality, student support services, distance education policies, transparency, and institutional effectiveness.

In addition, ASU submitted its Quality Enhancement Plan Impact Report, which was reviewed and accepted by the SACSCOC committee.

“As Alabama State University continues its upward trajectory, ASU remains committed to innovation, accountability, and delivering transformational educational experiences that prepare students for success in a global society,” Petty added.
