ASU and Callan

On Thursday, July 16, Alabama State University (ASU) and Callan JMB Inc. will sign a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking the start of a transformative partnership. The collaboration aims to boost workforce development, applied research, and pharmaceutical innovation through the newly launched Atlas Complex—a 150-acre campus dedicated to pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical logistics, and cold-chain infrastructure.

Callan JMB, a leading integrative logistics company, has invested heavily in Alabama to establish the Atlas Complex on the former Judson College site, focusing on strengthening America’s domestic health care supply chain. Partnering with Monarch Property Management, the company has created a cutting-edge facility poised to drive economic growth and innovation in the region.

ASU, a historically Black university with more than 158 years of educational leadership, will play a central role in the initiative as it celebrates its rich legacy as an institution founded in Marion, Alabama, the location of the complex and the partnership signing. The agreement will provide students with hands-on opportunities in biotechnology, regulatory compliance, health care logistics, and supply chain management through internships, research, and industry engagement. Faculty members will also lead applied research projects addressing critical challenges in health care manufacturing.

ASU President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., underscored that the collaboration with Callan JMB provides meaningful opportunities for students and faculty.

“Six years ago, we partnered with Callan JMB to help protect ASU students during COVID. Today, this partnership connects education directly with industry, preparing our students to lead and innovate in a rapidly evolving sector,” Ross emphasized.

Wayne Williams, CEO of Callan JMB, explained the vision behind the Atlas Complex: “We are building an ecosystem where industry, higher education, and innovation come together to solve vital health care supply chain challenges. Alabama State University is an exceptional partner in helping us build that future.”

The collaboration is expected to create high-quality jobs and generate more than $430 million in annual revenue at full maturity, positioning Marion as a growing hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and health care logistics.

Ross stated that the strategic alliance highlights a shared commitment to advancing Alabama’s life sciences economy and strengthening the nation’s health care infrastructure for a resilient, innovative future.

“This partnership is expected to further strengthen Alabama State University’s campus as a fully integrated environment supporting research, commercialization, workforce development and supply chain resilience,” added Ross.
