Dr. Gulnaz Javan, a world-acclaimed expert on forensic studies and coordinator of Forensic Biology in the Department of Physical and Forensic Sciences at Alabama State University, has been appointed to a two-year term on the prestigious Board of Trustees of the Forensic Sciences Foundation (FSF). Javan is widely known for her expertise in forensic biology and leadership in education.
The FSF, established in 1969, plays a crucial role in applying science to solve legal and social challenges. As a nonprofit affiliated with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), FSF advances research, education, and excellence in forensic sciences worldwide.
By joining the Board, Javan will work with leading experts committed to improving forensic standards and shaping the field’s future.
"I am honored to join the AAFS-FSF Board of Trustees Committee," said Javan. "This opportunity allows me to work alongside colleagues dedicated to improving forensic science standards, education, and research."
Javan explained that her goal is to ensure academic programs meet the highest standards in preparing for the next generation of forensic scientists. “My primary goal is to establish the accreditation for Alabama State University’s forensic science program.”
Javan’s most recent appointment is just one of many. Since 2013, Javan has held the following positions at AAFS: AAFS fellow, chair of the General Section Discipline Committee, evaluator for forensic science education programs, and a member of the FSF Awards Committee.
Javan said as chair of the Discipline Committee, she will guide the committee's efforts to advance interdisciplinary collaboration, professional development, and scientific excellence across the forensic sciences in the 2025-2026 term.
