At Alabama State University, a remarkable achievement has recently taken place in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Cancer Research Center. Dr. Sreelakshmi Krishnakumar, a dedicated postdoctoral researcher, has received a prestigious $25,000 Catalyst Award from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA).

Her project, titled “Mechanistic Analysis of Alcohol-Induced Hormone Dysregulation and Oncogenesis in Human 3D Organoids,” promises to push the boundaries of breast cancer research. Dr. Krishnakumar’s work focuses on how alcohol consumption might disrupt hormonal balance in ways that trigger the early steps of cancer development. Using innovative 3D organoid models—laboratory-grown mini versions of human breast tissue—she hopes to reveal the intricate molecular pathways that link alcohol exposure to cancer onset.

The research holds the potential of not only advancing scientific knowledge but also offering practical benefits.

“This award provides an incredible opportunity to address a critical gap in our understanding of alcohol-related breast cancer risk,” Dr. Krishnakumar explained. Her findings could lead to new biomarkers that detect breast cancer earlier and help create preventive strategies tailored for women at increased risk.

Dr. Manoj Mishra serves as the Cancer Research Center’s director and Krishnakumar’s mentor.

“We are thrilled to see Dr. Krishnakumar receive this recognition. Her innovative work not only advances breast cancer research but also strengthens our mission to build cancer research capacity at Alabama State University. This award reflects the growing impact of our team and our commitment to addressing health disparities through cutting-edge science.”

Mishra noted that thanks to continued support from BCRFA, Alabama State University is poised to make meaningful strides in the fight against breast cancer.
