Dr. Sharma

At Alabama State University’s Cancer Research Center, a remarkable moment has unfolded. Dr. Sudhanshu Sharma, a dedicated postdoctoral researcher in Biological Sciences, has received the prestigious AACR–Hallett Family Trust Scholar-in-Training Award. This national award, granted by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), recognizes outstanding young scientists and supports their participation at the organization’s annual meeting in April in San Diego, California.

Sharma’s award-winning research focuses on a stubborn and aggressive form of breast cancer known as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). His pioneering work reveals how the shape and movement of tiny cell structures, called lysosomes, control the release of immune-suppressing substances by cancer cells. TNBC is notorious for its complexity and disproportionate impact on African American women, making Sharma’s findings especially vital for future treatments and immunotherapy advancements.

“This honor motivates me to continue pursuing innovative approaches in cancer biology,” said Sharma. “I am grateful to AACR and to the Hallett Family for recognizing the potential of this research. I also thank Dr. (Manoj) Mishra and the entire Cancer Research Center team at ASU for their unwavering mentorship and support.”

Selected from a pool of talented researchers nationwide, Sharma will receive $1,500 to attend the AACR Annual Meeting. There, he will present his findings to leading experts in cancer science and connect with fellow award recipients and mentors.

Dr. Manoj Mishra, director of the ASU Cancer Research Center, praised Sharma’s dedication and highlighted how this award underscores a hopeful step forward in the fight against one of the most difficult cancers to treat, promising new paths to understanding and eventually defeating TNBC.

“We are delighted to see Dr. Sharma’s work being recognized on a national platform,” said Mishra. “This award reflects not only Dr. Sharma’s rigorous scientific contributions but also ASU’s growing impact in cancer research, health disparities, and immuno-oncology. His discoveries represent the innovative and community-responsive research mission of our center.”
