Alabama State University (ASU) kicked off its annual “Read and Rise” literacy initiative March 2-6, in celebration of Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss' birthday, spreading a love of reading to young readers throughout the River Region.
ASU students and staff visited multiple schools, including Valiant Cross Academy Elementary, Flowers Elementary, Vaughn Road Elementary, Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Development Center, MacMillan International Academy, and Dannelly Elementary School.
Ahead of the visits, ASU organized a weeklong book drive in February, collecting hundreds of new and gently used books from the University community. The books, along with special ASU pencils, bookmarks, and event-themed coloring books, were donated to the schools.
Growing Excitement
ASU students took turns reading stories, sharing smiles, and encouraging children to pursue their dreams through literacy, creating a sense of excitement.
One highlight was Sidney Guy, the 86th Miss Alabama State University, who visited classrooms throughout the week. She shared heartfelt stories, engaged students in lively conversations, and witnessed firsthand the joy that books bring to young minds.
“It has truly been such a heartwarming and fulfilling week visiting schools and reading to the children alongside my court,” Guy said. “Being able to step into their classrooms, see their excitement, and watch their faces light up during story time reminded me why representation and service matter so much. One of my favorite moments was hearing the students eagerly answer questions and share their dreams. Their confidence and imagination were so inspiring.”
Teachers like Ms. Kendretta Watkins and Ms. Patricia Melton at the Zelia Stephens Elementary School praised the visits, noting how the ASU readers inspired curiosity and a lifelong love of reading.
Principal Leslie Smiley from Valiant Cross Academy remarked on the impact. “Our scholars were not only entertained but motivated to read more. These visits make reading fun and meaningful.”
Amber Douglas, branding and marketing director at Alabama State University, spearheaded the program. She said the Rise and Read program reflects ASU’s commitment to community engagement.
“CommUniversity is more than an idea. It’s a commitment to showing up,” Douglas said. “We’re proud to support Read Across America Week by visiting schools across the River Region and investing in the next generation through literacy.”
