An Indiana father is turning personal tragedy into purpose by helping Alabama State University’s Communications Department expand its vision. Delbert “Junie” Himsel lost his son Jonathan almost three years ago, a moment that changed his life. In Jonathan’s memory, Himsel founded the Professor Jonathan M. Himsel Endowment fund.
“My son dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching and inspiring students. From his first day in August 1993 until his passing in April 2023, he shared his love for radio, television, and especially the Law of Communications, a subject he held close to his heart,” Himsel said.
Himsel noted that he launched the endowment through the Dubois County Community Foundation that will deposit monies to be managed by the ASU Foundation. The endowment’s purpose is clear: to support and advance the Communications Department by buying equipment and supplies that will aid academic programs, faculty growth and student initiatives — all in Jonathan’s name.
“He brought three decades of real-world experience in radio and television to the classroom. His dedication made a lasting impact, shaping countless students who admired not only his knowledge but also his mentorship,” Himsel added.
Jonathan’s educational journey began with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Indiana and a master’s from Butler University. Before he brought his talents to ASU, where he taught for 26 years, he worked for four years as a communications instructor at St. Meinrad College in Indiana. His passion and commitment inspired future generations of communicators to carry forward his values.
“In celebrating Jonathan’s life and work, Alabama State University keeps alive a legacy of excellence, dedication, and love for learning that will inspire students for years to come,” Himsel said.
