black and gold week

By Hazel Scott/ASU

Spring brings more than just blooming flowers in April 2026—it ushers in Alabama State University’s much-anticipated Black and Gold Week. From April 7 to 11, the campus buzzes with excitement as students, alumni, and the community come together to celebrate culture, athletics, and education.

The week launched on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with a Financial Literacy Forum at the Abernathy Auditorium, offering students valuable insights to prepare for their futures. As the days unfold, events like the SWARMAS1 Golf Classic on Friday at Lagoon Park challenge participants to bring their best swing for a worthy cause—the Student-Athletic Fund.

The energy builds toward the weekend when ASU welcomes football alumni for a reunion on April 10-12, reconnecting generations of Hornets who once roared on the gridiron. On Saturday, Connection Day lights up the ASU Stadium early in the morning, inviting new and returning members of the Hornet family to engage with leaders, explore the campus, and register for the day’s main event.

At 11 a.m., the Black and Gold Spring Football Game bursts into action. This annual showdown, the highlight of spring practice, features the Hornets and the electrifying Mighty Marching Hornets band.  Following the game, the new Women’s Flag Football team steps onto the field to face Columbus State University.

Adding to the spirited atmosphere, the stands will come alive with vibrant sounds as high school bands join the Mighty Marching Hornets, creating a symphony of proud tradition. Meanwhile, 250 lucky season ticket holders await a surprise during the Swarm Special giveaway—a chance for a free weekend getaway to Birmingham, a $100 gift card and tickets to the renowned Magic City Classic.

“Black and Gold Week promises to leave everyone with lasting memories of unity, competition, and celebration. From financial wisdom to athletic triumphs, the week reminds the Hornet community that their spirit is strongest when they come together—ready to soar into the future,”  said Shani Crayton, executive director of Marketing and Strategic Communications.
