Alabama State University’s GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) initiative recently kicked off its Back-to-School Scholars Symposium Series with an inaugural event at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium. The program brought together students from Park Crossing High School for a day dedicated to learning, leadership development, and fostering school spirit.

The event, themed “The Grand Slam: Where Knowledge Scores,” marks the first of three planned programs in the series, with future sessions scheduled at the RSA Activity Center and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

Event Highlights

The day began with a warm welcome from the Park Crossing High School band and cheerleaders. Students were then presented with custom GEAR UP baseball jerseys, a creation of local business, District 48 Clothing.

The symposium featured engaging workshops and classes on crucial areas, such as leadership skills, career exploration, and academic achievement. Esteemed speakers included Alabama State University President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., who inspired students to strive for excellence, and Kentavious Shufford, proprietor of District 48 Clothing, who shared valuable entrepreneurial insights.

Director's Vision

Jia O. Ross, ASU GEAR UP director, emphasized the significance of the symposiums.

“These symposiums are more than events—they are opportunities for our scholars to connect with peers, community leaders and organizations, explore new educational and career possibilities, and see themselves as leaders in their schools and communities,” Ross stated.
