Dr. Sapna Jain, an associate professor of Chemistry at Alabama State University (ASU), led five ASU undergraduate students in a 10-week intensive research experience at Furman University in South Carolina.
The program was part of the National Science Foundation-Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program. Jain collaborated with Dr. George Shields, a professor of Chemistry and Principal Investigator of the NSF REU at Furman University. The students involved were Keianna Mathis, Nataya Boyd, Laia Mitchell, Jattah Cleave, and Azorea McGill.
“This partnership aims to evolve, potentially resulting in additional funding and collaboration, further enhancing our undergraduate programs and equipping students with competitive skills,” said Jain.
Research Objectives
Jain's research group focused on advancing biopolymer materials by designing, synthesizing, and characterizing nano-encapsulation systems. The team examined antimicrobial peptide encapsulation efficiencies and tested the conjugates against pathogenic bacteria.
Holistic Student Development
Beyond scientific achievements, the program provided significant benefits for ASU students, including valuable hands-on experience in research laboratories with advanced instrumentation, and stipends, housing, and transportation allowances to support their participation.
ASU students also actively participated in a series of "Iron Chemist" events.
“These unique activities challenged students in diverse ways," said Jain.
Jain explained that the events consisted of team-based athletic competitions, pitch sessions where students presented their research in a concise format, and poster competitions evaluating their scientific communication skills.
“ASU students not only participated in these events but also won awards, making us all proud,” Jain added. “They will have the opportunity to present their findings at national and international conferences.
Collaboration and Environment
The immersive program at Furman University offered a dynamic, undergraduate-centered environment for state-of-the-art chemistry research. Jain's mentorship contributed to one of the nation's largest summer research programs among primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs).
“This summer experience at Furman University not only propelled the students' scientific skills forward but also provided a comprehensive and engaging environment for their personal and professional growth,” explained Jain.
