By Kenneth Mullinax/ASU

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) awarded two of its top three all-sports awards to the Alabama State University Athletics Department for the program’s outstanding performance during the 2024-2025 season.

ASU won SWAC's coveted "James Frank Commissioner’s Cup" and the "Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award" for the third year in a row. The Hornets barely missed winning all of SWAC's awards by a margin of just over three-points, coming in second place for SWAC's "C.D. Henry Award."

Dr. Jason Cable, ASU's Vice President and Director of Athletics (A.D.), shared that he couldn't be more proud of ASU's accomplishments.

"We are ecstatic about the University winning two of the three SWAC all-sports awards for the 2024-2025 season," stated Dr. Cable. "Good athletic programs are student-athlete centered, coach driven and administratively assisted."

AWARD CRITERIA

The all-sports awards are determined by how individual teams finish in league-sponsored sports. The programs are awarded a point value, and at the end of the season, the schools with the highest points win the all-sports awards.

ASU has won the SWAC's Commissioner's Cup nine of the last 12 years. This season, Hornets teams far out-paced other programs, winning league titles in Cross Country, Women’s Indoor Track and Field, Men’s Basketball (tournament), Women’s Golf, Men’s Tennis (regular season/tournament) and Women’s Tennis (regular season).

ASU Athletics has won the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award for the last three consecutive years and for the 10th time in the last 11 years.

WORKING TOGETHER

Cable explains that it takes many people working together to achieve this level of success.

"I am extremely proud of The Alabama State University's student-athletes, coaches and everyone involved in making this type of victory happen," shared Dr. Cable. "I also want everyone to know that the leadership and encouragement that we receive from ASU's President, Dr. (Quinton T.) Ross, allows us to do so well and make history happen again and again."
