honor Ensembles at asu

Thank you for your interest in our Middle School & High School Honor ensembles at Alabama State University!

Directors may use the links below to complete recommendations for their students. Selected students will be notified of their acceptance via email. After registration closes, a detailed information packet will be sent to students and directors, including the complete festival schedule, lodging options for out-of-town students, and other pertinent information. There will be a participation fee of $65 per student, payable upon arrival on campus via check or money order made out to the ASU Foundation, with "Music" in the memo line. Alternatively, Directors may pay for all of their students at once online at ASU Foundation, selecting "Music Department" as the Gift Designation, and then providing a copy of the receipt at registration.

The Honor ensembles also serve as an opportunity for high school seniors interested in attending ASU to  audition for a scholarship to attend ASU. Band students interested in auditioning for a Music and/or Band scholarship should prepare two contrasting pieces (one technical and one lyrical) in addition to all twelve major scales and arpeggios. Choir students interested in auditioning for a Music and/or Choir scholarship should prepare a piece from two of the three following categories: (1) a published art song, such as from the Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias, or a published African-American Negro Spiritual (sample composers: Harry T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Magaret Bonds, etc.), (2) a Patriotic Song, such as "My Country Tis of Thee," or "The Star-Spangled Banner," (3) a musical theater selection, such as "Tomorrow" from Annie, "Maria" from West Side Story, etc.

At ASU, we are always excited to work with the outstanding students who participate in our Honor ensembles, and we look forward to providing a musically rewarding experience for all involved. For any questions about the Honor ensembles, please contact Dr. Russell Greene at rgreene@alasu.edu
