Alabama State University’s campus has been alive with the sound of music this week as young musicians gathered for the University’s annual Summer Band Camp. The week-long program, hosted by ASU’s acclaimed Mighty Marching Hornets, will culminate in a public showcase on Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at New ASU Stadium.
The showcase will highlight the musical growth, discipline and teamwork developed by campers throughout the intensive program. Open to the public, the event promises an exciting display of talent and dedication from students who have spent the week learning from some of the best in the field.
“We bring in kids to teach them techniques, teach them how to work together and teach them some of the things that they don't understand or don't know,” said Dr. James B. Oliver, director of the Mighty Marching Hornets. “It’s about more than just music—it’s about mentorship, collaboration and growth.”
This year’s camp holds special meaning for the ASU band family. Dr. Oliver shared that the camp is dedicated to the memory of his late assistant, Charles Goodwin III, a beloved percussion instructor who played a vital role in past camps.
“This camp is dedicated to my assistant, Charles Goodwin III,” Oliver added. “He would've been here with us working with the percussion section. He's definitely missed.”
The showcase will serve not only as a celebration of the campers’ achievements but also as a heartfelt tribute to Goodwin’s lasting impact on the program and its students.
Community members, alumni and supporters of the arts are encouraged to attend and show their support for the next generation of musicians and the legacy of those who helped shape them.
