Alabama State University alumna, Alicia Monique Sullivan Smith, has been named “Teacher of the Year” at Rainbow Elementary School, located in Madison, Alabama - near Huntsville.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Smith, graduated from ASU in the class of 2011 with a major in elementary education. She is employed as a school counselor and holds National Board Certification in Counseling, a notable achievement in her field.
Smith believes the award is not only about her individual accomplishments, but it also is indicative of the strength of the city of Madison's educational system and the success of Rainbow Elementary School, its students and her fellow employees.
“I am inspired every day by our students and their parents and by my fellow colleagues at Rainbow Elementary who all do so well each and every day,” Smith said. "This recognition is about the commitment that we all contribute to help our students grow and succeed.”
The Rainbow Elementary School shared that Smith has sponsored several initiatives that contributed to her recognition, including overseeing a program titled "Student 2 Student" in which her students have monthly lunches with other students in the school’s Structured Learning classrooms. She also is actively involved in Rainbow's “Student of the Month” program that rewards children that exhibit positive behavior and character development.
“These experiences make me incredibly proud to be part of Rainbow’s family and contribute to a supportive, inclusive and character-driven environment,” Smith stated. “Of all of our programs, I’m especially proud of our ‘Rocket Mail’ that promotes second-graders to write letters about problems to older students for advice on how to solve them.”
Smith's husband is Aubrian Smith, and their children are Aubrian, Jr. and August.
