Alabama State University (ASU) is celebrating a significant milestone after launching its Mechanical Engineering program in Fall 2024. The program has made a notable impact on both the campus and the surrounding community, thanks to strategic partnerships and support from organizations like the Alabama Power Foundation.

ASU recently received a $250,000 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation to enhance its efforts in engineering education. The funding will specifically support the University's Engineering Summer Pathways program, which aims to inspire high school juniors and seniors—particularly African American students—to explore engineering careers through immersive, hands-on experiences.

“Funding from The Alabama Power Foundation will help this program address the growing demand for skilled engineers in today’s workforce,” said Dr. Derrick Dean, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at ASU. “We continue expanding the pipeline through K-12 outreach and pre-college summer programs, sparking interest in mechanical engineering for students who might not otherwise consider it.”

The program has experienced strong enrollment and engagement. Many students participated in last summer’s "Broadening the Pipeline to Careers in Engineering" initiative, funded by The Honda Foundation, which introduced freshmen to engineering fundamentals and included a visit to the Honda Manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Alabama.

With a curriculum focused on innovation, sustainability and real-world problem-solving, the Mechanical Engineering program has quickly become a cornerstone of ASU’s STEM offerings.

“ASU plays an important role in diversifying the engineering profession,” Dean added. “By expanding into mechanical engineering, ASU is opening new doors for underrepresented students in STEM, helping to build a more inclusive and innovative workforce across Alabama and beyond.”

Backed by strong community support, dedicated faculty and a growing student body, ASU’s Mechanical Engineering program is poised to become a leader in engineering education.
