Alabama State University was abuzz with excitement on Saturday, August 16, as the University hosted its highly anticipated third annual 5k Buzz Run and the accompanying Stinger’s Fun Run for children.
More than 200 runners and walkers of all levels laced up to participate in the event. The day was filled with camaraderie, wellness, and community engagement.
Brenda Brown Dillard, ASU Board of Trustees President and the Honorary Captain of the Buzz Run 5K Team, explained that this event aligns perfectly with ASU’s commitment to community and wellness.
“We are thrilled to welcome our community back for the ASU 5K race,” expressed Dillard. “When we crafted our mission, our strategic plan, one of the key pillars was CommUniversity. I remember brainstorming those concepts in a room. The president of this University and the Board of Trustees prioritize this commitment. We are eager to involve the community in all of our initiatives at Alabama State. Having been present for its inaugural year, I am honored to serve as the team captain this year, as it embodies both my values and those of the University.
ASU President Quinton T. Ross, Jr. said the concept of the race is to bridge the University with the community in a way that brings participants together for a shared, healthy experience unique to the campus environment.
“The 5K Buzz Race is part of the University’s CommUniversity mission to continue to be a good neighbor and support our local community,” explained Ross, who participated in the 5K run. “This race itself provides a fun experience for the whole family, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.”
PUSHING LIMITS AND BUILDING BONDS
Runners and walkers, from all backgrounds, gathered at the starting line at 7 a.m., creating a welcoming atmosphere and a strong sense of community around the event. Participants and spectators could feel the energy radiating through the crowd. The course wound through the picturesque University grounds, highlighting the iconic campus landmarks. The run started and ended at the ASU Stadium.
Many runners hit the course chasing personal milestones and the sheer joy of the run; but at the front of the pack, a fierce competitive spirit took hold as top finishers pushed the limits of speed and endurance.
Cheers erupted as participants crossed the finish line, many sporting determined smiles and sharing triumphant high-fives. The overall winner, Ryan Stanford, finished in under 19 minutes.
“This is my first Buzz Run. I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy…I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it,” said Stanford. “I work for a company that supports all the colleges in the area with cross-country programs and track programs. Your new track here is beautiful. I’m very supportive of ASU, a beautiful campus, and the students’ energy is amazing.”
He left three words of inspiration for his Hornets competitors: “Keep on Running.”
Prize packages, consisting of a Medal of Completion, ASU-branded socks and a T-shirt, were awarded to everyone who ran or walked. The overall winner received a special plaque. Additionally, top male and female finishers in several age categories were awarded plaques.
LITTLE LEGS, BIG SMILES!
Following the 5k, the energy shifted to a more playful tone with the Stinger’s Fun Run for children aged 4-12. A dedicated, shorter course was set up for the University's youngest community members, allowing them to experience the thrill of a race in a safe and encouraging environment. Giggles and shouts of joy filled the air as the children, some accompanied by parents, dashed toward the finish line, each receiving a medal and a well-deserved round of applause. Each child was celebrated as a winner.
FUN ACTIVITIES
After the races had concluded, participants and the community joined the ASU Buzz Fest at the ASU Stadium, to meet coaches and members of the Hornets football team and get autographs. The football team also played a scrimmage game.
IMPACT AND FUTURE
Beyond the physical activity, the 5K Buzz Run and Stinger’s Fun Run served as a powerful reminder of the University’s commitment to fostering a connected and healthy community.
"This annual Communiversity event has become a highlight for our community, with anticipation building each year. We are committed to building on its success and expanding its reach," said Shani Crayton, executive director of Marketing and Strategic Communications.
