Student One of 10 in U.S. Selected for National Emerging Leaders Summit

An Alabama State University student was selected to attend the recent nationwide Emerging Leaders Summit.

ASU's DaVonte Watson, a Communications major specializing in Public Relations, was one of only 10 selected from across the United States to participate in both the summit and its "Milestones in Mentoring" reception, which was held in Chicago. The entire summit, including air transportation, lodging and all other expenses, were part of the award.
Watson, a native of Birmingham, and an honor's student, will graduate from Alabama State University in December of 2024.

"I am overwhelmed to have been selected to receive this honor and to participate with my other fellow communications majors from schools across the nation to be with them in Chicago," Watson said. "Receiving this scholarship was not just an honor but a profound turning point in my journey. It is an affirmation that my dedication to the field of public relations was received and valued. Attending the summit and gala, I was immersed in a world of wisdom and experience."

FACULTY MEMBER SPEAKS ON WATSON
Dr. L. Simone Byrd, professor of Public Relations in the ASU department of Communications, explained that Watson is among the most outstanding students in Communications.

"We are excited to have had DaVonte selected to this important summit," Byrd said. "He is very much among the finest student leaders in our department and no doubt he will be a future leader in the field of marketing and public relations nationwide. He is a model student, respectful to all, a thinker, an intellectual and is an absolute joy to teach. This was a well earned honor."
