Welcome Class of 2027! Get ready to be plugged in to Hornet Nation and start your journey of becoming a historymaker! Alabama State University has been hard at work planning events to create unforgettable memories during Welcome Week, Aug. 13-19. The University asks that all new students make plans to attend Welcome Week.
This year’s Welcome Week theme is “Buzz Language XXIII.” It is the traditional time period for all new first-year transfer and commuter students to become more familiar with the ASU campus, settle in and meet new people. It’s also a time for students to kick back and have fun!
Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to engage in interactive experiences with other college students, have opportunities to join an on-campus organization, meet new friends, try new experiences and learn about ASU’s distinctive educational philosophy, as well as make connections and memories that will last a lifetime.
Fun-filled, energetic activities are also part of the week. Students will enjoy the Rites of Passage Ceremony, a Block Party, a Carnival, Talent Show, Pool Party, a Gospel concert, which is open to the public, and much more. The week will have something for everyone. (See the full schedule below.)
Dr. Malinda Swoope, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, said Welcome Week programs are a campuswide collaboration of events and activities designed to help new and returning students in their ongoing academic journey.
“It is important to embrace our new students because you want to make sure that they feel welcome and get acclimated to ASU and all it has to offer. There are some students who don’t know a soul when they enter college, but through Welcome Week, they can build relationships and friendships, possibly making lifelong friends,” Swoope said.
Swoope noted that most new students are coming from a high school experience where they have been with their parents and family all of their lives and now, they are coming to a new place.
“ASU puts in an effort through Welcome Week to help them not feel isolated or homesick that first week. We want to keep them engaged and busy, and of course the main priority is going to class and getting their education…At the end of the day, we want to make sure that they are engaged and have a social life as well,” Swoope added.
