About the Department
WELCOME FROM THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
As Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts at Alabama State University, I greet you with hope and enthusiasm. Here at ASU we are determined that each individual will reach their full potential as an artist and as an individual. Our programs are designed to prepare you academically and artistically for an exciting and fulfilling career in Theatre. This is a pre-professional program for exceptionally talented and committed students who seek a career in the arts through extensive experience in acting, dramaturgy, costume design and other aspects of Technical Theatre. Our graduates are professional actors, dancers, and technicians.
The Theatre faculty perceives you as a young adult, fully capable and accountable for your own artistic and personal life. We encourage your involvement, commitment, and dedication to the arts as you matriculate here at Alabama State University and the Department of Theatre Arts.
The Alabama State University Department of Theatre Arts’ vision is to become a creative force of excellence in theatre by empowering students to become productive scholars, creative artists and work as collaborative individuals. We seek to develop whole human beings through creative engagement, by emphasizing the rich cultural heritage and the significance of the African American experience.
The mission of the Alabama State University Department of Theatre Arts is to merge rigorous academics with a wide range of experiences and opportunities to develop artistic sensitivity, creativity and integrity. We are committed to having an ethnically and culturally diverse environment to work and study in one of four concentrations; performance, technical, dance and generalist. Thus the department encourages a faculty student relationship that broadens the educational and professional experience and provides artistic enrichment for the community at large. Student success is the primary aim.
Our philosophy is student centered, we use the disciplines of theatre to develop and strengthen students, in order to impart knowledge, creativity, and individual character through instruction, co-curricular activity and service outreach.
