COBA Professor Honored for Service on IRS Advisory Council
Dr. Dave Thompson, Jr., chair of the Accounting and Finance Department in the Percy J. Vaughn College of Business Administration at Alabama State University, was recently honored with a certificate of appreciation for serving on the Large Business and International Business (LB&I) committee for three years. The certificate was presented by Charles Retting, the current IRS commissioner.
Thompson is currently the only African American member of the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council. The council was created to serve as an advisory body to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue.
Thompson and other distinguished professionals on the council are responsible for researching, advising and writing a final report on the issues facing the IRS concerning LB&I. Some topics that were addressed consisted of providing the IRS with adequate and reliable funding, improving the Free File Program by increasing IRS oversight and restructuring the MOU, establishing and enforcing minimum standards of competence for all tax practitioners, and other issues concerning transparency in the work of government agencies as it relates to Congress and the public.
