ASU Professor Wins Regional Teaching Excellence Award for Business Schools!
By: Kenneth Mullinax/ASU.
An Alabama State University faculty member has been named as the regional recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award, which is given by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
ASU's Dr. Sara Bliss Kiser, professor of Management in the Dr. Percy J. Vaughn Jr. College of Business Administration (COBA) is the regional recipient of the 2020 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award for exemplifying teaching excellence in the classroom. She was recognized at the Council's recent virtual conference with both a crystal medallion and a monetary stipend.
Kiser, whose deep roots with the University extend all the way back to her attending kindergarten on campus, first joined ASU's faculty in 1996.
"I love my students at Alabama State University, and I love being a teacher and figuratively seeing the light bulb go off over their heads when they deduce the answer to a classroom assignment," Kiser said gleefully. "Just being a part of that positive process with our ASU students inspires me to always give it and them my best and love every day that I teach on campus."

GREW-UP ON ASU'S CAMPUS
Kiser is no stranger to ASU, having virtually grown up on campus as a student in the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Learning Center, as a kindergarten student beginning at only three years-old through studying here to the second grade. In addition, her father, the late Dr. Gordon C. Bliss, served as one of ASU's acclaimed deans of the College of Education.
COBA's dean, Dr. Kamal Hingorani, said that he and Kiser’s colleagues are proud of her recognition.
"Our University and this college are committed to achieving global recognition through excellence in teaching, research and service, and the award won by Dr. Kiser is a testament of both her and the College of Business Administration's commitment to excellence in the classroom. We applaud her achievement," Hingorani said.

ORIGIN OF THE AWARD
The ACBSP's Baccalaureate Degree Commission created the Teaching Excellence Award in 2002 to recognize instructors at the baccalaureate and graduate degree level. With more than 1,100 member campuses in more than 60 nations as part of its organization, ACBSP is the only global accrediting body to accredit business, accounting and business-related programs at all degree levels.
ACBSP is the only specialized body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching. The award is open to application by the entire membership, according to Jeffrey Alderman, ACBSP's president and CEO.
“It is more important than ever for business programs to produce graduates who are ready to enter the global marketplace and the recognition of teaching excellence is one way we achieve this goal,” Alderman stated.

BELIEVES ASU IS THE REASON SHE WON
Kiser said that this award is merely formal recognition of what has been instilled in her beginning at an early age as she grew up on ASU's campus.
"ASU and its culture of learning have helped me achieve greatness in teaching and have helped me to become the professor and teacher that I am today," Kiser exclaimed.
