Alabama State University's Department of Theatre Arts is thrilled to announce its much-anticipated Fall 2023 production of "The Wiz." This vibrant and re-imagined musical will take the audience on an unforgettable journey from November 16th to November 19th, 2023, at the Leila Barlow Theatre.

Directed by the accomplished Brian Martin, "The Wiz" brings to life a modern reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic, "The Wizard of Oz." Set against the backdrop of a vibrant urban landscape and featuring a talented African American cast, the production promises a dynamic and enchanting experience for all.

In this contemporary adaptation, audiences will follow the story of Dorothy, a 24-year-old kindergarten teacher from Harlem, and her loyal dog, Toto. They find themselves lost in a snowstorm on Thanksgiving night, transported to the surreal Land of Oz, reminiscent of a fantastical version of New York City. Dorothy embarks on an epic adventure to find her way home, with the enigmatic "Wiz" as her destination.

During her journey, Dorothy encounters an eclectic group of companions, each with their unique aspirations: a scarecrow made of garbage yearning for a brain, a Tin Man embodying the spirit of a turn-of-the-century mechanical carnie from Coney Island in search of a heart, and a lion banished from the jungle, now a stoic statue in front of the New York Public Library.

"The Wiz" is a celebration of love, friendship, courage, and the resilience of the human spirit, filled with captivating musical performances, breathtaking choreography, and mesmerizing set design.
