Alabama State University’s student body has a new slate of leaders for the 2023-24 academic year. Last week, four executive branch members were selected to serve as the collective “voice” for students at the University.

A large contingency of supporters of all of the candidates gathered at the ASU John Garrick Hardy Student Center Amphitheater to hear the announcement of the newly elected leaders.

Sophomore Landon Hale, a Birmingham native majoring in Rehabilitation Services, was elected to serve as the Student Government Association (SGA) president for the 2023-2024 academic year. Hale has interned at Columbia University New York, as well as worked for Baptist Health East-Montgomery Surgery Center as a Central Sterile Technician.  His post-graduation goal is to further his career in healthcare.

Hope Smith’s campaign slogan “It’s Time for H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Peers Effectively)” connected with voters and won her the vice president position. The Montgomery native is a junior majoring in Business Management. Hope has a passion for making change through advocacy.  She plans on bridging her skills of public speaking, work ethic, and time management with a career choice of public administration by way of public health and educational policy.

Montgomery native Alexandra Thomas beat out several candidates to be named  SGA Secretary. The sophomore, majoring in Rehabilitation Services, campaigned on the slogan “Act Like A Scholar, Think Like a Hornet.”  That phrase is more than just a campaign slogan for Thomas and she hopes to prove why during her tenure.

Tre'von Conner, a junior majoring in finance, will serve as SGA Treasurer. The Mobile, Alabama native’s campaign slogan was “C.O.U.N.T. on Conner.” Conner is an Honors Finance Student seeking experience in Private Equity (growth and strategy) and Strategy Consulting. He is the 2023 Percy J. Vaughn College of Business Finance Major of the Year, a two-time Student Government Association Treasurer, and a 2023 NFL HBCU Battle of the Brains Champion. This summer, Conner will be interning with Ernst and Young as a Business Consulting Intern in the Government and Public Sectors Division.

The Student Government Association is the official student governance body at ASU. Its main responsibilities are to help facilitate student/faculty relations, to ensure that student concerns and needs are resolved, and to oversee student clubs and other activities. The SGA ensures that students have a representative “voice” on campus.
