A rising senior is the latest Alabama State University student to receive a prestigious internship.

Kortney Coleman, a graduating senior majoring in theatre, is interning at The Village/ Liv TMG Record Label in Oak Park, Michigan, a few minutes outside of Detroit.

Coleman was overjoyed when she heard she received the internship. “I was super ready to get up and go and start my dream. I love the environment. My major is theatre, but my passion is music.”

During her internship, she will have job-related and leadership training and will receive mentoring resources to help her develop skills to thrive in the industry.

“Right now, I’m into social media; so, I help run their social media pages. I’ve been able to sit in on different studio sessions with various artists and sit in on the makings of a virtual concert.  I’m also learning about fundamental marketing methods, business management, A&R skills, artist development and sound engineering. All of this is important to know to make it in the industry,” Coleman said.

The Wetumpka native said her internship will help her down the road. “One day I want to launch my own record label/production company. So, being around people in the business and learning how to run a record label and studio will help me to create my own.”

Coleman hopes her internships will lead to a full-time job after graduating college.

 ASU Role

ASU played a pivotal role, she said, in preparing her for her internship.

“ASU fully prepares their students to enter a wide variety of professional careers,” Coleman said. “They taught me to bring my best.  The theatre department taught me how to present myself professionally. ASU is the best.”
