ASU Alumna & Montgomery Native Wins Torch of Global Enlightenment Award

An alumna from Alabama State University and a native of Montgomery has won the 2019 Torch of Global Enlightenment Award from the World Affairs Council, which honors organizations and individuals that have contributed to global understanding and appreciation of different cultures, languages and lands.
ASU's own Dr. Armenta Early Hinton, the recipient of the Global Enlightenment Award, received her B.F.A. in music history and piano from ASU and credits the University with assisting her with having the skills to compete and assist people in the global workplace.
"I was a music major at the Alabama State University, and I have used those transferable skills that I gained at ASU," Hinton said.
She is a legacy graduate of ASU. Both of her parents met and earned their degrees from Alabama State College (now Alabama State University). Following the University's important educational foundation, both of her parents were teachers at all-black schools in Alabama during the time of segregation and active Jim Crow laws. Her mother was a teacher and an assistant principal at a primary school in Lowndes County, and her father was a math teacher at Hudson High School in Selma.
Hinton, who grew up in Montgomery just doors away from the home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and just down the street from ASU has education and diversity in her blood.
“My family valued education and made it such an important part of our lives that I couldn’t do anything else,” said Hinton. “When I got back to the U.S., I felt a deficit. After reentering America again after being away for 16 years, I felt that I needed to continue my education and be better prepared for a climate that hadn’t changed and didn’t feel inclusive.”
Hinton is the director of Diversity, Inclusion and Title IX Coordinator at Elizabethtown College, a private school located in Elizabethtown, Pa. She is an active scholar, and presenter in the areas of diversity, equity and Title IX. Her broad range of experience includes over 16 years in Germany and England. Her intellectual focus and research centers on diversity, access and equity in education and leadership and sustainability of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She received her post graduate certificate in Psychotherapy from Birmingham City University in England and her Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University.
