Event Date range
07 - 08 April 2020

The Alabama State University College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is delighted to announce that our 2020 Liberal Arts and Social Science Conference will be held in the Hardy Student Center, on Tuesday, April 7 and Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

Our conference theme this year is "Women, activism, and achievement: Empowerment and its limitations, 1920-2020."  Our theme is inspired by the fact that 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

We invite undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members to submit proposals for papers to be read at the conference. Please note that papers delivered at the conference need not adhere closely to the conference theme.

Please follow the link below to access the conference’s proposal submissions portal.  We are accepting submissions for individual papers, and for full (two to three members) paper panels. The full guidelines for each type of proposal are specified on the portal.

The deadline for all proposal submissions is March 1, 2020.  The committee strongly encourages early submissions.

Additionally, the Alabama State University Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Conference will confer the Ralph Bryson Award for Excellence in Student Research upon the student who submits the best research essay.

This contest is open to Alabama State University undergraduate students only.

Students who wish to participate in the contest must submit their essay by the deadline, using the special link below. Research essays entered in this contest must be at least 2,500 words long, use at least five sources, and be documented in APA, MLA, or Chicago style. Essays should be submitted as Microsoft Word (.docx) files. Students will need to log in to their ASU Google account to complete the file upload.

In order to be considered for the award, essays must meet the criteria noted above, and must be submitted by no later than March 1, 2020.

Students should follow the link below to reach the submissions portal:

The winning entry will be announced on April 8th at the Alabama State University Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Conference.
