NIGMS-RISE

Minority Biomedical Research Support
Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement
(NIGMS-RISE)

NIH logoThe National Institute of General Medical Sciences-Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (NIGMS-RISE) is part of the Center for NanoBiotechnology Research (CNBR) at ASU. The program will focus on training MS students to facilitate their entry into PhD Programs at major US institutions in the field of biomedical research or behavioral sciences. A team of biomedical research faculty at ASU will provide intense research training to RISE students leading to the MS degree. The research training of RISE students will be complemented with mentoring by a team of external collaborators resulting in the transition of ASU RISE MS graduates into PhD programs at research-intensive institutions.

With funding from the NIH, many graduate students and research scientists at ASU will be able to expand their scientific capabilities in biomedical research. Several research intensive institutions within the State of Alabama and in the nation will partner with ASU to train the next generation of biomedical scientists.

The NIGMS-RISE aims to increase the number of PhDs in the field of biomedical research. The project aims to:

(1) Enhance PhD Preparedness of RISE Participants through Curricular and Extracurricular Activities.

(2) Provide Rigorous Research Training to RISE Students to Complete the MS Degree and Ensure their Acceptance into PhD Programs in Biomedical Sciences.
