The Alabama Broadcaster's Association has awarded the department of Communications at Alabama State University a $50,000 endowed scholarship, which will benefit the University's students majoring in television and broadcast communications.
Dr. Ivon Alcime, who serves as the interim chair of the department of Communications, explained that the scholarship has been a work in progress for an extended period of time and is specifically tailored to benefit the department’s junior and senior class students each year.
"We wish to thank the Alabama Broadcaster's for their award of this $50,000 scholarship that is tailor-made to help our juniors and seniors for many years to come achieve their goals of being professionals in these two fields upon their graduation," Alcime said. "These monies are important to ASU's department of Communication's existing students because it will help retain them in school by paying monies owed to the University, which will allow them to graduate. Conversely, it will help us attract incoming students who will know that if they make the grades that they may one day receive financial help toward the end of their academic career here at ASU because of this scholarship."
THANKS TO FORMER ASU STAFF MEMBER WHO HELPED MAKE IT HAPPEN
Chairman Alcime said credit for the scholarship award must also be shared, in large part, with a former ASU staff member who now is a producer at WSFA TV 12 in Montgomery.
"I must formally recognize the numerous contributions of Ms. Shani Crayton in helping our department, its students, and the University receive this endowed scholarship from the Alabama Broadcaster's Association," Alcime stated. "I would like to express our tremendous gratitude now for all of her many efforts in helping to secure the endowed scholarship for ASU's department of Communications, which will benefit its students for years to come."
NOTE: ASU's Alcime stated that a formal ceremony to present the first student scholarship checks is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 18.
