Alabama State University has entered into a partnership that netted a $25,000 donation, as well as new opportunities for students. ASU officials and representatives of the Center of Financial Advancement (CFA) along with CFA’s HomeFree-USA signed a Memorandum of Understanding on June 27 for a program that is a first-of-its-kind for the state of Alabama.

Participating during the MOU ceremony were ASU President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. and the executive director of the Center of Financial Advancement, Gwen Garnett. They were joined at the podium by the President Pro-Tempore of the ASU Board of Trustees, Delbert Madison; LuWanna Williams with CFA's “HomeFree-USA;” ASU's Dr. Tanjula Petty, assistant provost for Student Success and Special Initiatives; and Dr. Derrick Brewster, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Several other ASU leaders, faculty, staff, and students were in attendance at the event.

"This is an MOU agreement to provide our students with opportunities for jobs and internships in the real estate, finance, mortgage and technology industry," said President Ross. "This provides our students access and prepares them for solid financial growth; teaches money management and social skills; introduces them to credit, wealth-building and aspects of real estate finance; promotes home ownership; and most of all, it emphasizes the importance of 'CommUniversity.'”

CFA’s $25,000 investment includes such benefits as providing an introduction and access to the mortgage banking and real estate finance industry for ASU students. In addition to internship and career opportunities, students will be able to leverage and access HomeFree-USA services. The initiative also establishes an eight-month program for students with a stipend structure, and offers seminars and certification opportunities provided by industry leaders.

"This will help enhance the spirit of advancement in our students at The Alabama State University," President Ross stated.
