Alabama State University’s Board of Trustees has voted to honor President William H. Harris with the title of President Emeritus and to rename Hall Street on ASU’s campus as Harris Way.

As Dr. William H. Harris enters his final days as president of Alabama State University, the ASU Board of Trustees has voted to honor him with a tribute befitting his exemplary legacy at the institution.

During a meeting on Friday, May 11 the Board voted to confer the title of President Emeritus upon Harris, whose last day as ASU president is July 31. The Board also voted to rename Hall Street on the ASU campus, from Carter Hill Road to the Interstate 85 Overpass, as Harris Way.

Harris first served as ASU president from 1994 to 2000 and returned to serve again as president in 2008.

During his latest tenure the University’s physical campus has expanded to include the new construction and completion of multiple state-of-the art facilities, including the Ralph David Abernathy College of Education Building, the Life Science Building, the J. Garrick Hardy Student Services Building, the soon-to-be-completed New ASU Stadium, and several others.

In addition to the University’s physical growth, Harris has been the architect of a visionary plan to transform the institution’s academic programs and position ASU as a world-class institution with global impact.

Under Harris’ leadership, the University has achieved the reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, new accreditations and reaffirmations of degree programs, its first Ph.D. degree programs and the addition of several high-profile, high-demand academic offerings.

In the Resolution of Commendation naming Harris as President Emeritus, the Board lauded Harris for his “vision … to establish a model for operational and best practices” and for his “historic and exemplary contributions” to the University’s rich legacy.

Elton Dean Sr., chair of ASU's Board of Trustees, said the results of Harris's leadership are visible to anyone who steps foot onto the campus.

“During both of Dr. Harris’s tenures he did a tremendous job for the University. He began his vision during his first tenure and came back to make his vision a reality,” Dean said. “Anyone who drives by the campus can see the results of his leadership. He put a team together and implemented his initiatives. He did it his way, and it worked.”
