Senior theatre arts major Raven Washington has been elected by the Alabama State University student body as Miss ASU 2012-2013.

After a month-long campaign, Alabama State University students have made their choice for a new Miss ASU for the upcoming school year.

Raven Washington was elected as Miss ASU 2012-2013 by the student body on April 10, after competing against two of her peers the night before in the Miss ASU Pageant, which was held in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Birmingham native is a senior theatre arts major who aspires to pursue film opportunities in Atlanta upon graduating.  She also plans to further her education by attending graduate school at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Washington said she was elated to be named Miss ASU, and added that she has many plans for the upcoming school year, including new student-oriented activities and a campaign to address bullying.

“I was overwhelmed with joy; God is truly great,” Washington said of her election. “I plan on having a wonderful experience and can’t wait to get started. Teamwork is dream work, and I look forward to making next year one to remember.”

This election introduced a new format for Miss ASU and her court. While Miss ASU’s court has consisted of a first and second attendant in previous years, the new format includes a court of the class queens.

Charita Walker was elected as Miss Senior; Rose Todd as Miss Junior; and Taylor Edwards as Miss Sophomore. Miss Freshmen will be elected by the freshmen class in the fall.
