ASU's College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Friends of the Theatre partner with Troy University to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The public is invited to join Alabama State University for the fourth annual citywide MLK Community Celebration to honor the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the historic Davis Theatre, 251 Montgomery St.

The event, “A Message for the Future from Keepers of the Dream,” reflects the desire of the program for America to move forward as we continue to bond as a community.

The citywide community celebration, directed by Dr. Tommie H. Stewart, dean of ASU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and a Friends of the Theatre liaison, features spirituals and contemporary music by an interfaith choir, dramatic presentations, dance and recognition awards to local residents who have kept Dr. King's dream alive.

“This event will demonstrate a concerted effort from our culturally diverse community to exhibit peace, unity and love -- embracing Dr. King’s concept of the Beloved Community,” said Stewart.

Performances will be held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for the matinee and $10 for the evening showing.

A number of individuals will receive the Beloved Community Award, which commends residents for their exemplary work, leadership and commitment in building their own version of Dr. King's “Beloved Community.”

The event is sponsored by the Alabama State University College of Visual and Performing Arts, Friends of the Theatre and Troy University.
