sCIENTIST

A nationally acclaimed scientist - Dr. Julio Turrens, associate dean and professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of South Alabama - will be the guest speaker at Alabama State University's Ethics in Science Workshop on Thursday (Oct. 5), and will speak in room 130 of the ASU Life Science Building.

A noted researcher, Torrens will discuss research integrity and research compliance.

He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has served on numerous peer review committees at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). The event is sponsored by the University’s Office of Research.

Turrens’s research has been focused in two areas, including free radical metabolism in mammalian cells, and intermediate metabolism of parasitic protozoa. His research resulted in the identification of various intracellular sources of oxidant species.

The second area of interest focuses on the intermediate metabolism of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas' disease in Central and South America. His main contribution in this area was the identification of an enzyme that may serve as a target against these parasitic diseases.
