Release Date: Sep 10, 2017

Alabama State University has issued an urgent message for all ASU students and parents.

To All ASU Students and Parents:

Alabama State University will be closed both Monday and Tuesday due to the National Weather Service issuing tropical storm warnings throughout the state of Alabama; however, essential personnel will still report to work. The campus leadership will be assessing conditions to determine any further actions. The ASU campus and surrounding areas are expected to experience storm effects beginning Monday morning and increasing into Monday night. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency forecast for our area indicates the likelihood of sustained winds of 15–20 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph and 2–4 inches of rain.

ASU will reopen on Wednesday and classes will resume as scheduled.

The Fred Shuttlesworth Dining Hall will operate as usual Monday and Tuesday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For students living off campus at The Crossings, please know that your safety and well-being are important to us. We are working with Aramark to facilitate meal drops tomorrow for both lunch and dinner. Please continue to check your email for updates.

For those of you expecting work study checks, please come by the cashier's office between 9 a.m. and noon tomorrow to receive your payments.

Students, please be mindful of your safety. During a tropical storm, it is important to stay off the roads and minimize your time outdoors. Stay away from areas where windows are present. Given that the power may go in and out, please use the stairs in your respective residence halls and avoid the elevators. Try to keep on hand some non-perishable snacks like granola bars, dry cereal, bottled water, etc. Take some time to communicate with your parents and family members, and determine the methods by which you will stay in touch with your loved ones, whether by phone or social media. If you'd like to get more information on preparing an emergency kit and maintaining family communication, visit ready.gov.  Take advantage of the power we currently have to ensure that your cell phones are charged. Lastly, continue to monitor your official alasu email address for the latest and most pertinent information.

If you're in need of assistance, call the ASU Department of Public Safety at 334-229-4400.

Thanks and stay safe.
