The Alabama State University Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary during a reception on Thursday, Aug. 31.

As Alabama State University celebrates its sesquicentennial, one of its partner organizations celebrates 50 years of providing vital support to the University.

The Alabama State College Foundation, now known as the Alabama State University Foundation, was incorporated on Dec. 27, 1967, during the administration of President Levi Watkins. In his book on the University’s history, Watkins stated that the mission of the Foundation was to “solicit, receive and administer contributions and other forms of voluntary support for the general welfare of Alabama State College.”

Foundation board chairwoman, Janet Sutton, said the reception was a night of celebration of the work and longevity of the organization.

“We want to make our mark and put a stamp in place that we are now a part of Alabama State University’s history; so you will not forget us, ever,” said Sutton. “Today, the Foundation manages over 50 programs for individual donors, group donors and organizations. All of the donations that come to the Foundation for the University are used exactly as the donors intend us to use them. No exceptions. “

Interim President Leon C. Wilson praised the Foundation for its work on behalf of the University.

“We are extremely grateful for the dedicated effort and sacrifices you have made on behalf of this University,” said Wilson. “We look forward to this partnership as it continues for the next 50 years and beyond.”

ASU’s National Alumni Association, one of the biggest supporters of the Foundation, received an award from the Foundation, and later presented a check for $10,000 in recognition of the organization’s 50th anniversary.

The evening also included a special presentation to Sutton for her “tireless efforts on behalf of the Foundation and Alabama State University.
