Alumni gathered on Sept. 1, at a pre-game luncheon to celebrate that Ole ‘Bama State Spirit and to recognize the inaugural “50 under 50” class.

It was standing-room only on Friday, Sept. 1, as alumni from across the nation came together to celebrate the first Labor Day Classic Alumni Weekend.

The Alumni Luncheon, held in the John Garrick Hardy Student Center ballroom, featured the annual pre-game pep rally, as well as donor recognitions and the celebration of the inaugural class of ASU’s 50 under 50 awards recipients. (To view photos, click here.)

Nominations for the 50 under 50 were submitted from across the country. A Review Committee made up of a diverse cross section of University faculty, staff and community partners carefully reviewed the nominations, debated the merits of each candidate and selected 30 of the honorees. The remaining 20 were selected based on their demonstrated achievements and support of the University.

Jennifer Anderson, director of Development, said she is thankful for all the support that the alumni and donors have given to ASU.

“We are always looking for new ways to engage our alumni,” Anderson said. “The ASU Office of Development looks at an alumni supporter as someone that we can call upon and who is always there for us when we need them. ASU has faced many challenges over the years, and one of the things that has remained constant is that we have continuously relied upon our alumni supporters, ambassadors and donors.”

A highlight of the morning included the presentation of the recipients of the first “50 under 50” honorees. The group represented a number of professions including lawyers, doctors, teachers, scientists, judges, financial analysts, news consultants, actors and a secret service agent.

"We feel that this group represents some of the best and brightest among our University's alums," said Zillah M. Fluker, ASU's vice president for Institutional Advancement. "The exciting thing is that we have so many more alumni who are achieving at high levels or serving their fellow man in laudable capacities. We're sure that the next 50 recipients will be just as deserving of this award."

Recipients were extremely excited to be selected for the honor. They traveled from across the country and as far away as Abu Dhabi.

Anthony Stockard

“It’s a huge honor to be recognized and to be in this collection of the inaugural class. Receiving many awards across a career has been, amazing but none has meant as much as receiving something from home here at ASU. Its an honor and I am going to do my best to uphold the expectation, wave the flag, and lift the banner of ASU even more moving forward.”

Dr. Alicia Best

“This is a very distinct honor. I am very excited and happy to be a part of the group. This was a really wonderful idea to get this group engaged and to have us be advocates for ASU.”

Anwar Shahid

“This is an opportunity to get together with a group of people from my generation to give back to ASU. It’s a pleasure and a humbling experience to be honored by your family, and I look forward to honoring other members of 50 under 50 in the future.”
Yasmin Rana
“It’s an honor to be acknowledged by the university. I never thought that at 30 years old I would get this award.”

Ruth Anna Marshae Williams

“This means a lot to me. It is actually overwhelming because I was very surprised that I was picked as one of the 50 under 50; and I am way under 50. I am just so honored to have this and so humbled to have this experience.”

Senator Tonya Peterson Anderson

“It is more than an honor to receive this award from ASU. It is a welcome home,” Anderson said. “I am always representing ASU; cheering for ASU and always trying to recruit. I understand that ASU is a foundation for so much of my successes.

Dr. Phadra Williams Kee

“I was very much honored to be even considered for the first inaugural class of the 50 under 50. As a proud graduate of ASU, the core of who I am and who I’ve become in my career is based on the foundation that I received here at ASU. So, to be honored for the work that I’ve done over the last 20 years is a blessing and it makes me proud to be a child of this institution.”

Cedrick Moore

“I think this is a phenomenal opportunity to showcase the alumni from ASU who are doing great things. We are all interested in supporting the university and I believe our backgrounds and our degrees that came from this university allowed us to achieve the success we all have today so I appreciate the opportunity to come back and participate in such a great program.”

Cedric Lane

“This is a great honor but I am more concerned about the work that’s involved. I am ready to start serving and doing some work. I am just looking forward to what’s next; looking to serve and do my part.”

Quincy P. Minor

“I feel very honored to be a part of this, especially since this is the inaugural 50 under 50 awards. I am looking forward to start working to help get more students to come to ASU.”

Taylor Bryant

“This is definitely an honor. I think it’s great because when I reflect back on my career journey, ASU made me. I can go out and lead in different areas because of what I was able to do here. It’s really an honor to be amongst black excellence. We are seeing alumni do things at great levels so it’s great to come together so we can continue to support the greatness that’s happening at ASU.”

Victor Revill

“This is a distinct privilege to be recognized as someone who is doing well and excelling. It’s a pleasure for me. Also I like the challenge we have to give back to our university; be ambassadors of our university; to represent our university. I am happy to be part of this distinguished group. There are a lot of alumni in their fields doing extremely well. I am just ecstatic.”
