More than 30 student-athletes were honored with a reception, as they prepare for graduation on Friday, Dec. 9.
One of the honors bestowed upon senior student athletes is to earn their sashes, signaling their status as candidates for graduation.
During a reception on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 31 student athletes received their sashes. The event, held in the Great Hall of Teachers, was time to reflect on the atheletes' academic journeys and to hear congratulatory remarks from the administration.
Director of Athletics Melvin Hines spoke to the new class of graduates with some reminders about being gracious and understanding the interconnection between them and the far-reaching alumni of Alabama State University.
“You’ll want to make sure that you thank your parents who have been with you through this journey,” Hines said.
“For all their lectures, punishments, talks and times that they may have had to push you to get this point, you’ll appreciate it now. When they see you go across that stage, they will say it was all worth it.”
Hines also discussed the importance of Hornet Nation, its family and how the school is interconnected in the world.
“It always amazes me how many Alabama State University graduates that there are across the country. Wherever you go, there seems to be somebody who graduated from here. Once you’re a Hornet, you’re always a Hornet. Remember that as you go into your job search and meet with people.”
The following is a list of student-athletes who will be graduating on Friday in the fall commencement at 3 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
