Alabama State University’s 294th Commencement exercises included 430 candidates for degrees and a poignant moment for three graduates.

The Dunn-Oliver Acadome was filled to capacity, as family members and friends gathered to show their support for the summer and fall graduating classes of Alabama State University.

More than 400 students were candidates for degrees, including 306 undergraduate and 124 graduate students.

Dr. Anthony Adams, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, served as the Commencement speaker. He concluded his address with three points of encouragement to the graduates:

“First, be unafraid to share your personal and intimate stories. All of you have something important to say that could be transformative for younger and older people,” said Adams. “Second, reflect on your own life experiences and how they have impacted your life and how they can influence others. Third, mentor someone. Remember the adage, ‘Each one, teach one.’”

Brittany Rennals and Kaneisha Gaston both attended the event in wheelchairs. The crowd erupted into applause as they were led to the platform and Rennals managed to stand from her chair and walk across the stage, aided by a Golden Ambassador. Due to her injuries, Jasmine Marshall was unable to attend. Her degree was presented to her mother, Monica Marshall.
