Release Date: Aug 25, 2016

ASU sophomore student scholars interested in studying abroad are encouraged to apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship by Sept. 15, 2016.

***
Alabama State University’s Office of Diversity and International Affairs is pleased to announce an exciting study abroad opportunity for sophomore students.

Applications currently are being accepted for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, an initiative created to break down the barriers of cost, curriculum and culture to make study abroad opportunities accessible to students from the nation’s Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). The program is a joint effort between the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education’s Center for Minority Serving Institutions.

Each year for the next three years, the fellowship will cover 100 percent of program fees and travel costs for 10 students of color from 10 MSIs. Each cohort of 10 students will take part in a summer study abroad program designed to enhance their leadership and intercultural skills in one of three locations: London, England (summer 2017); Cape Town, South Africa (summer 2018); and Seoul, South Korea (summer 2019).

Application Criteria and Deadline

The deadline to apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship is Sept. 15, 2016, by 5 p.m. EST. To apply, students must:

  • be classified as a sophomore;
  • be nominated and receive a letter of recommendation from ASU’s President;
  • have a GPA of 3.0 or greater;
  • pass the ASU citizenship check; and
  • be available to travel to annual conferences.
