Greetings from ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd

Boyd OfficialWelcome to the campus of Alabama State University, as we gather for this HBCU Presidents’ Summit on STEM.

ASU is honored to serve as host for this Summit, here in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. Over the next few days, we will have unprecedented opportunities to discuss opportunities to push, promote and expand the STEM agenda on all our campuses.

We look forward to hearing from informative speakers from corporations and government agencies, engaging in progress discussions and formulating strategic plans. We look forward to collaborative initiatives to help level the field of opportunities for our students regarding STEM academics, research and innovations.

I would like to thank the National Science Foundation (NSF), specifically Dr. Claudia Rankins, Program Director, for making this event possible. NSF has a laudable history of support for HBCUs. At Alabama State University, NSF grants have allowed our students and faculty to conduct cutting-edge research in areas from cancer to nanobiotechnology. Many other HBCUs have reaped similar benefits.

I would also like to thank the members of the Summit committee who have worked diligently to make sure that your visit is both pleasant and beneficial.

I thank you for taking the time from your extraordinarily busy schedules to participate in this Summit. We look forward to great collaborations and other opportunities as part of our outcomes.
