Alabama State University's Department of Theatre Arts will perform August Wilson's “Gem of the Ocean” from October 17 to 20 at 7 p.m. nightly in the Leila Barlow Theatre.

 

“Gem of the Ocean” is the first installment of Wilson’s decade-by-decade, 10-play chronicle, known at the “Pittsburgh Cycle”, dramatizing the African-American experience in the 20th century. Set in Pittsburgh in 1904, Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old former slave, takes wandering fugitive Citizen Barlow into her home and guides him on a mystical journey toward healing his guilt over the crime he has committed.

 

The play is directed by Brian Martin.

 

Student tickets are $6 with valid ASU identification card and $12 for general admission. Group rates also are available.
